The Energy DepartmentdzԹs Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E0 has announced US$60 million in funding for 22 innovative new projects aimed at detecting and measuring methane emissions and developing localised thermal management systems that reduce the energy needed to heat and cool buildings. The projects are funded through ARPA-EdzԹs two newest programs: Methane Observation Networks with Innovative Technology to Obtain Reductions (MONITOR) and Delivering Efficient Local Thermal Amenities (DELTA).
Ernest Moniz, US Energy Secretary said, dzԹthese new projects highlight the Department of EnergydzԹs commitment to developing a broad range of disruptive technologies to ensure a secure, affordable and sustainable American energy future. Investments in innovative methane detection and thermal management technologies demonstrate ARPA-EdzԹs role in catalysing energy research and development by leveraging our top scientists and engineers from across the country.dzԹ
Assistant Secretary for Fossil Fuels Christopher A. Smith has been confirmed by the Senate as the DOEdzԹs Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy. Moniz said, dzԹChris SmithdzԹs depth of expertise and experience in the fossil energy field make him well qualified for this position. I am confident that he will continue to serve the Department, President Obama and the nation with the same dedication he has shown over the past five years. I thank the Senate for their action to approve ChrisdzԹ nomination, and I look forward to continuing my work with him, to ensure the US can continue to rely on clean, affordable energy from our nationdzԹs fossil fuel resources.dzԹ
Prior to joining the Department, Smith served in managerial and analytical positions in the private sector. He spent 11 years with two major international oil companies focused primarily on upstream business development and LNG trading, including three years negotiating production and transportation agreements in Bogota, Colombia.
